“Non-verbal” is Latin, meaning “without words”. We know that individuals who are nonspeaking, minimally speaking, and unreliably speaking have words! They have thoughts, ideas, emotions, opinions, etc, but do not have reliable speech due to apraxia. Saying “non-verbal” implies that the individual does not have words. Language is cognitive and speech is 100% a motor task.


No, the majority of spelling users are autistic but spelling is for anyone with conditions affecting motor sensory skills. Such as Down Syndrome and Angelman Syndrome. Spelling teaches the motor skills necessary to communicate though a letterboard.


Spelling to Communicate is for anyone who is 5 years old or older that is nonspeaking, minimally speaking, or unreliably speaking!
